Jerry: Romo might be playing his best football ever

With his Cowboys riding a five-game win streak, Dallas owner Jerry Jones couldn't be more pleased with the work of starting quarterback Tony Romo.

"I don't know that I can say that I've ever seen him play better," Jones told KRLD-FM on Friday, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "We've seen him certainly do what Romo does. That is instinctively make plays. We've seen him basically protect the ball, and I know for a fact that he's bought into his working and the coordination that he has to have with (play-caller Scott) Linehan."

Jones went on to say that Romo's last "three or four" starts "basically ratify" the quarterback's statement in training camp that his best seasons are ahead.

With the most game-winning drives since 2012, the oft-criticized Romo has been a clutch player under center for years. It's easy to forget that he led the NFL in yards per attempt (8.6) during his first campaign as a starter in 2006. He's shown flashes of being a top-10 passer from the start.

We'd also point to his 2011 season -- when he tossed 31 touchdowns to just 10 picks -- as an example of the kind of hot streak Romo is capable of.

This year's Cowboys, though, are built differently than any squad he's led before. Behind the NFC's top offensive line, Romo has been sacked just three times over the past four games.

Dallas is battering teams with a clock-chewing, ground-heavy scheme that ranks third in the league in rushing percentage after ranking 29th a year ago. The Cowboys are close to running the ball on half their snaps (49.9), a barrier the team hasn't crossed since 2001, when Quincy Carter, Anthony Wright, Ryan Leaf and the glorious Clint Stoerner all started games for Dallas.

It's no surprise to see Romo thriving in a more balanced attack. We struggle to label this his finest play to date, but the past month hints at the signal-caller guiding the best Cowboys team he's ever been a part of.
