Joe Thomas: Brian Hoyer is 'a lot like Tom Brady'

Hyperbole season continues to bake the NFL landscape as training camp creeps into Week 2.

The glowing praise for Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer has been ubiquitous throughout the start of camp. Left tackle Joe Thomas took those raves into the stratosphere Monday.

"He's a lot like Tom Brady," Thomas told The Plain Dealer. "When you look at the way he competes and the way he demands the most out of everybody around him, it's no coincidence that those guys played together. (Hoyer) has a lot of those same mental attributes and that's a great thing for a quarterback to have.

"He's the ultimate competitor, and no matter if we drafted a quarterback No. 1 overall, I knew that in his mind he expects to win the job because that's the type of competitor he is and the type of quarterback."

We've heard plenty about Hoyer being a competitor -- dating back to his college days at Michigan State. Hoyer was on the Patriots from 2009 to 2011, but the Brady comparison still feels contrived.

Teammates clearly respond to Hoyer's drive. However, leadership and work ethic will only get the Browns so far. Coming off an ACL tear, Hoyer must still prove he's a better choice under center than Johnny Manziel when live shots are being fired at him.

Regardless of the platitudes about Hoyer in the first weeks of training camp, the quarterback battle in Cleveland is far from over.

The latest Around The League Podcast visits with former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum and discusses the best of the early training-camp surprises.
