Jermichael Finley remains one of the most intriguing free agents on the open market.
Though he has the talent of a top-tier tight end, Finley's surgically repaired neck is keeping him from joining an NFL roster.
The only team that Finley visited during free agency, Seattle, is now out of the chase to sign the tight end, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday, per a source informed of the Seahawks' thinking. ProFootballTalk first reported the news.
While Finley -- a physical freak -- would have been an intriguing addition to Darrell Bevell's offense, the Seahawks will enter 2014 with a depth chart headlined by Zach Miller, Luke Willson and Anthony McCoy.
The Green Bay Packers have spoken openly about their affinity for Finley, hinting at a possible return to Lambeau Field. However, the 27-year-old has yet to be tested by the Packers' medical staff -- one of the most cautious in the NFL.
Finley was also reported to have met a "mystery team" Friday.
If he never plays again because of his neck injury, Finley can cash out the $10 million insurance policy he took out, per Rapoport. Finley himself discussed the insurance policy in an essay for TheMMQB.com last October.
However, for Finley, the game -- and the road to recovery -- does not revolve around finances:
Dr. Joseph Maroon, the neurosurgeon who fused the tight end's C3-C4 vertebrae after he suffered a spinal contusion in October, has cleared the 6-foot-5 tight end. However, until a team independently clears him, Finley will remain a talented man without a football job.
