Davis: Only two quarterbacks taken in first round of draft

With so much news coming out at this time of year and rumors running wild, it seems like the pulse of the NFL draft swings a different direction every week.

Part of that is due to players working out at pro days or for various teams in private workouts. Part of that is driven by front office personnel actually saying something of value about their teams' draft plans.

At the moment, the prevailing thought seems to be that the draft stock of the quarterbacks is slipping with the depth of talent at other positions in this draft becoming more and more apparent. That could mean bad news for Teddy Bridgewater and Derek Carr as NFL Media analyst Charles Davis thinks only two signal-callers will hear their names called on the first day of the 2014 NFL Draft.

"I think Blake Bortles, the quarterback from UCF, goes at the top to the Houston Texans. I think that is where Bill O'Brien wants to go," Davis said on "Path to the Draft" on NFL Network. "And I'm going to say that Johnny Manziel will be the second quarterback off the board. He'll be irresistible to a team in the first round."

That would represent a big tumble for NFL Media draft analyst Mike Mayock's top-rated quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who has been dealing with plenty of criticism ever since his pro day. It's not just about him personally, as the entire group has seen its value in the first round questioned.

In Bucky Brooks' latest mock draft, he even runs through a scenario in which no quarterbacks are taken on the first day of the draft. That would be interesting, but not unprecedented.

"I keep coming back to this, we keep talking about how deep this draft is. Go back to 2011 and think about the quarterbacks that came off the board then," Davis said. "The Bengals found Andy Dalton in the second round, the 49ers found Kaepernick in the second round.

"Maybe you get a player first and then come back for the quarterback."

It's a somewhat bold take on how things will shape up and who goes where. Yet, when the draft comes around in May, nobody will be surprised if it winds up being true.
