Case Keenum to start for Texans; Matt Schaub is 'fine'

The Houston Texans will start Case Keenum at quarterback for Week 9, coach Gary Kubiak said Monday.

The second-year NFL quarterback performed well in his first start, a 17-16 loss to the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7.

Before the Texans' bye week, Kubiak called Matt Schaub the starting quarterback. Kubiak then said the team would evaluate both Schaub and Keenum during the time off.

On Monday, Kubiak said he liked what he saw from Keenum.

"Matt's health is fine," Kubiak said of his QB decision. "It's a decision based on what I saw take place this week with Case."

Before Kubiak's announcement, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that Schaub had torn ankle ligaments that he would attempt to play through, according to two sources informed of the injury.

One source said Schaub might not be "right" all season.

(Some fans surely will argue he wasn't "right" even when healthy.)

Given how this season has gone for the Texans, it makes sense for Kubiak to find out what Keenum brings to the table.
