Derek Carr welcomed his first child into the world on Monday in what could be the start of a monumental 12 months for the Fresno State quarterback.

Top 10 unheralded prospects

Carr's wife, Heather, gave birth to 7-pound, 10.9-ounce son Dallas, the Fresno Bee reported. Derek missed two days of practice for the proceedings, but he returned to action Wednesday.

"I was going to stay as long as I needed to stay," Carr said. "If it meant missing out until October, that's what would've happened. Because I'm going to be dad a lot longer than I'll be a quarterback."

On the field, Carr begins the season ranked 32nd on Daniel Jeremiah's Talented Top 50 list of the top college football players and will be one of the more intriguing senior signal-callers in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Carr's Bulldogs come in ranked 31st in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll and are expected to challenge for the Mountain West Conference title and a BCS bowl bid.
