Technology is great. You love it, we love it, everybody loves it.
Then it shouldn't be a surprise that whether it's Google Glass or cameras on helmets, NFL teams are trying every new technology to try to gain an advantage.Â
The latest is the New England Patriots, who have placed a small camera on the quarterbacks' helmets during practice for the past week or so.
"It's something we haven't done before, so we'll take a look at it and see how effective it is or what we can get out of it," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Sunday. "I'm not sure exactly how effective that will or won't be, but it's something we're trying that's a little bit new. We'll see how it goes."
(Insert Patriots/camera/Spygate joke here.)
As is his modus operandi, Belichick was tight-lipped when questioned further about the use of the cameras during training camp.
A helmet cam provides an interesting perspective that can give coaches insight into exactly what a quarterback is seeing as he goes through his pre-snap and post-snap progressions. However, one would think it's more useful for a younger player than Tom Brady.
With the viewer, not team, in mind, we'll continue to petition NFL Films requesting they create contact lenses that will allow us to literally see everything the quarterback sees.
