NEW YORK -- When the Dallas Cowboys' turn finally came in the first round on Thursday night, they made a move to protect Tony Romo.
The Cowboys selected Wisconsin center Travis Frederick with the 31st overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, adding talent and depth to a weak spot of coach Jason Garrett's offense.

Earlier in the evening, the Cowboyssent their 18th pick to the San Francisco 49ers in return for the 31st and 74th overall picks. San Francisco grabbed safety Eric Reid out of LSU.
It's not a flashy move, but Frederick gives Dallas' line much-needed stability. Phil Costa was signed to a two-year extension last month, and he could kick over to right guard, fortifying a trouble spot for the team. Frederick is in line to be a starter, whether that's at center or guard.
