Brian Billick: I'd 'never say never' to coaching return

Is he or isn't he looking for a coaching job?

Around the League sat down with NFL Network's Brian Billick on Monday to follow up on the report that he met with the Philadelphia Eagles last week about their head-coaching vacancy.

Echoing his words from Monday's "The Coaches Show" podcast, Billick wouldn't elaborate on the interview, but acknowledged he's spoken with multiple clubs in an advisory capacity since parting ways with the Baltimore Ravens following the 2007 season.

Billick said his role with NFL Network and puts him in a "different facility every Friday (during the season) talking to players coaches, general managers and owners," a perspective teams are interested in as they hunt down new coaching talent.

Naturally, some of those conversations have touched on Billick's potential return to the league.

"The conversations I've had with clubs over the last five years -- and the clubs I have had conversations with this year -- are wide and varied, in terms of coaches they're looking at, and certainly about my interest, and what that might be," Billick said.

The coach acknowledged that after winning a Super Bowl and enjoying a "pretty good first marriage" with general manager Ozzie Newsome in Baltimore, he's only looking for the "right team, in the right situation, that is looking for a specific skill set that I fit -- in a circumstance that would interest me -- and that's a pretty narrow bandwidth."

Added Billick: "I haven't been necessarily optimistic that that could come together. If it (did), then certainly I would be interested, because once a coach, always a coach. Not gonna comment on which of those situations -- either in the past, or there now -- that might fit, but that's kind of the criteria that I would use."

I asked one more time -- possibly to annoyance -- if Billick could envision himself on an NFL sideline come September.

"It's not one size fits all," Billick said. "... Are there a couple (of teams) out there, is there one out there, that might fit? Certainly. I would never say never."
