Cardinals QB Kolb sits out but says toe injury making progress

As Kevin Kolb sees it, getting the walking boot off his right foot qualifies as "progress."

The quarterback didn't practice with the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday, but he did tell reporters that the turf toe on his right foot is improving. He indicated that he hoped to practice Thursday, but if not, he'd aim for Friday.

2011 Re-Draft: Plenty of twists

Did the Cardinals make the right call in April's draft with Patrick Peterson? Gil Brandt reveals what the first round would look like today.

"We're just going to see every morning where we stand," Kolb said. "I'm hoping my body can heal fast."

But a report from the Arizona Republic claims that Kolb's injury is to more than just his toe. The quarterback also has a mid-foot sprain in other ligaments and a bone bruise.

While pain tolerance is part of the equation, Kolb said, his ability to push off his right foot when he throws will be a determining factor in whether or not he plays Sunday against the NFC West rival St. Louis Rams.

More than anything, Kolb seems to be most bothered by the term "turf toe."

"I wish it was called something different than 'turf toe.' It sounds like I'm a weenie," he told KGME-AM this week.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said the team will know more about Kolb's status when the quarterback is fully able to run and plant off the foot.

"It's a good sign," Whisenhunt said. "He's come a long ways in two days. It's good to see him making that kind of progress."

As for who would start if Kolb is ruled out, Whisenhunt said it "probably" would fall on John Skelton.

Running back Beanie Wells (knee), tight end Rob Housler (groin), safety Kerry Rhodes (foot) and fullback Anthony Sherman (ankle) also didn't practice Wednesday, according to The Republic. Whisenhunt said Wells, who has been dealing with the lingering knee issue, would get more work in practice as the week progresses.
