Christion was an excellent athlete at Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, an all-state pick in football as a junior and the anchor on two state champion relays at the 2015 state track meet. He was injured early in his senior season, though, which allowed SDSU to land his talent. Christion showed that athleticism early, garnering the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team status after starting four of eight games and completing 55.3 percent of his passes (89-of-161) for 1,286 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions (along with 347 yards and five touchdowns rushing). In his first year as the full-time starter, Christion completed 64.3 percent of his throws (279-434) for 3,714 yards, 30 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 13 games. He set 11 school passing records that season and was named the MVFC Offensive Player of the Year and first-team all-conference. He was a second-team all-conference pick in 2017 even though he finished second in the FCS with 35 touchdown passes and seventh with 3,515 passing yards. The team captain's completion percentage was down (249-of-428, 58.1 percent) and his interceptions increased to 14. Christion played well enough as a senior to share first-team All-MVFC honors with North Dakota State's Easton Stick, starting all 13 games, completing 57.9 percent of his passes (197-of-340) for 3,020 yards and 32 touchdowns against eight interceptions. He also ran for 333 yards and six scores on the year.

Draft Projection
Priority free agent
Overview
Strong-armed quarterback with outstanding mobility and speed outside the pocket whose lack of accuracy could lead teams to see him as more of a project than a developmental quarterback. Christion has experience as a full-field reader and is comfortable throwing in roll-out scenarios. He's got the arm talent to fit throws into tight windows, but ball placement is not a given. His physical traits should make him a coveted priority free agent.
Strengths
  • Two-year captain
  • 33-11 record a starter
  • Holds seven career passing records for school
  • Comfortable pocket climber when the edge closes in
  • Can sling a 60-yard deep ball on a rope
  • His play has been weather-tested

  • Works through progressions in his offense
  • Outstanding speed when he leaves the pocket
  • Scored 26 rushing touchdowns over four years
Weaknesses
  • Play trailed off late in the season and into the playoffs
  • Will look away from opportunities to sting blitzers
  • Several touchdowns were easy throws to free-runners
  • Level of competition at defensive back is low
  • Doesn't work back to previous targets on back-side
  • Carries the ball low in his set-up
  • Staredowns give zone linebackers the jump
  • Ball placement and accuracy are erratic
  • Hit the 60 percent completion mark just once in four years
