Garland Gregory, a former San Francisco 49ers star offensive lineman and a member of the original 1946 team, has died. He was 92.
The 49ers announced Gregory's death Friday night. They said he had been battling a brief illness that was not disclosed.
"I was saddened to hear of the passing of Garland Gregory. I feel very fortunate to have spent time with Garland, one of our original 1946 team members, sharing stories about both the 49ers and our common ties to Arkansas," 49ers co-chairman and owner John York said in a statement Saturday. "Garland truly loved the game of football and was one of the most positive people I have ever had the privilege of meeting. He will be missed by the entire 49ers family."
Gregory was a native of Columbia, La., and a graduate of Louisiana Tech. He became the school's first Associated Press first-team All-American in 1941.
Gregory served during World War II and played with the Fourth Air Force team before signing with the 49ers. He played two seasons with San Francisco and was an All-Pro selection both years.
Services to honor Gregory are scheduled Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston, La.
