Travaris Cadet leaves Saints for New England Patriots

Now that Reggie Bush has chosen to sign with the San Francisco 49ers, the New England Patriots have acquired another former New Orleans Saints running back to function as a third-down specialist.

The Patriots signed tailback Travaris Cadet, the team announced.

Due in part to salary-cap issues, Cadet was one of the intriguing restricted free agents non-tendered by the Saints. Defensive tackle Tyrunn Walker, signed by the Lionsas a potential starter, was another one.

Purely a passing-down asset, Cadet has carried the ball just 11 times in three years compared to 45 receptions for 345 yards (7.7) over that span. He also has experience on kickoffs, averaging 25.9 yards per on 50 returns.

If the Patriots don't land a high-profile replacement for Shane Vereen, it could be Cadet and 2014 fourth-round pick James White competing for that essential role in Tom Brady's ball-control passing game.
