New England Patriots work out RB Montee Ball

Three weeks after Montee Ball went unclaimed on waivers, the former Denver Broncos second-round draft pick is drawing interest from another AFC powerhouse.

The New England Patriots worked out Ball on Tuesday, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported.

The workout doesn't necessarily mean a signing is imminent. The Patriots are meticulous about keeping their watch list up to date by kicking the tires on street free agents.

Dion Lewis has been one of the NFL's most pleasant surprises, excelling as a three-down back -- a novelty in New England under coach Bill Belichick.

The Patriots also boast quality depth in LeGarrette Blount, who effectively kills the clock and allows the offense to use a power rushing attack as a change-of-pace from Tom Brady's shotgun spread.

If either Lewis or Blount goes down with an injury, the Patriots can turn to Ball as insurance.
