Report: Cam Newton willing to let QB market reset

Cam Newton is comfortable taking the wait-and-see approach to his contract negotiations with the Carolina Panthers.

The Charlotte Observer reported Saturday that Newton's representatives were scheduled to meet with the team officials at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Don't expect a new deal to come together quickly, however.

According to two league sources, Newton plans to let the market reset with Colts quarterback Andrew Luck and Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson negotiating toward huge new deals.

Luck's deal could make him the highest-paid player in the NFL, while NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported this week Wilson could receive a potentially market-changing fully guaranteed contract.

Both deals can only help leverage for Newton, who is scheduled to make a fully guaranteed $14.7 million in 2015 after the Panthers picked up his fifth-year option. Newton is not interested in the type of incentive-laden deal Colin Kaepernick signed with the 49ers last year.

General manager Dave Gettleman has said in the past he views Newton as a true franchise quarterback, so consider it unlikely that the Panthers let the former No. 1 overall pick get away. Newton is going to get paid -- but others are going to get paid first.
