Less than one week after interviewing for the Dallas' Cowboys head-coaching position, receivers coach Ray Sherman confirmed Sunday in a statement that his contract with the team will not be renewed.
"My contract with the Dallas Cowboys is expiring at the end of the season," Sherman said in the statement. "I appreciate the opportunity that the Cowboys have given me. I was able to coach a great group of receivers who now have a tremendous foundation, giving them the ability to continue to excel for years to come in the NFL."
The Cowboys interviewed Sherman to satisfy the NFL's "Rooney Rule," which requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate, before removing the interim tag from Jason Garrett's title and making him the head coach.
Miami Dolphins assistant head coach Todd Bowles was the only other candidate to interview for the head-coach opening. Bowles likely will take over the Cowboys' defensive coordinator vacancy, although a league source told NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi that Garrett's first choice is Dolphins defensive coordinator Mike Nolan.
Sherman joined the Cowboys in 2007 after spending two seasons as the receivers coach for the Tennessee Titans. His 22-year NFL career also includes stops with the Houston Oilers, Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers.
