Report: Jets would eye Sparano, Koetter if Schottenheimer bolts

The Jets have publicly said that Brian Schottenheimer would be welcomed back as offensive coordinator despite a rocky season, but if he departs for greener pastures, the team is preparing to find his replacement, the New York Post reported Saturday.

After Schottenheimer interviewed for Jacksonville's head-coaching position Friday, sources told the newspaper that the Jets are eyeing former Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano and Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter as potential replacements.

Before he coached the Dolphins, Sparano, 50, worked under Parcells in Dallas and served as the Cowboys' lead play-caller in 2006. Koetter, 52, has served as the Jaguars' offensive coordinator since 2007, but his future with the team is uncertain as the team fishes for a new head coach. Jacksonville's offense ranked last in the NFL this season.

Schottenheimer has been the Jets' offensive coordinator since 2006 and built the NFL's top-ranked rushing attack in 2009 and second-best in 2010. He signed a contract extension through 2012 before this season, but he came under fire as the Jets stumbled to an 8-8 record and missed the playoffs.
