Redskins special teams coach Smith staying with team

Washington Redskins special teams coach Danny Smith will remain with the team, a league source said Monday.

Smith was pursued by Broncos coach John Fox to oversee special teams in Denver, as NFL.com and NFL Network reported he would, but declined that opportunity Monday to remain with the Redskins.

Smith, whose contract was set to expire, has been with the Redskins since 2004. He has 15 seasons of coaching NFL experience.

Several Redskins players actively campaigned for Smith to stay after reports surfaced describing the Broncos' interest in the coach.

Smith also was a tight ends coach with the Detroit Lions from 1999 to 2000 and held a four-year stint with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1995 to 1998, serving two seasons as special teams coach and two coaching the defensive backs.
