Redskins RB Hightower ruled out for season with torn ACL

The initial medical tests on Tim Hightower's injured left knee indicate a torn anterior cruciate ligament, league sources said Monday, and coach Mike Shanahan later confirmed that the Washington Redskins' running back is out for the season with the injury.

Hightower underwent an MRI exam Monday, one day after he left the Redskins' 33-20 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, N.C., during the third quarter. Even before he or the team knew the full scale of the injury, Hightower said he was "determined to come back" this season.

Without Hightower, their leading rusher, the Redskins will turn to Ryan Torain and rookie Roy Helu, the only other tailbacks currently on the roster.
