Observations from camp: Steelers, Jets

NFL Network reporter and NFL RedZone host Scott Hanson has recently spent time with the Steelers in Latrobe, Pa., and the Jets in Florham Park, N.J. Here are a few of his observations:

1. Let's see what condition your condition is in. The Steelers' conditioning test morphed into a "conditioning evaluation," according to coach Mike Tomlin. It was a series of timed, 100-yard sprints from goal line to goal line. Good thing is wasn't a test -- two massive DTs, Flozell Adams and Casey Hampton, along with running back Jonathan Dwyer, would not have passed. On the positive side, Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey looked like he could run track. Listed at 304 pounds, Pouncey just toyed with the drill, accelerating and throttling down, completely in command of the allotted time of 18 seconds for linemen. Take my word for it: Pouncey is an athlete with a capital 'A.'

2. High-fives all around. One interesting site: After the final players finished their sprints, a svelte Ben Rothlisberger went and high-fived every one of his teammates. The gesture caught some guys off guard as they were doubled-over, panting. And, yes, even though the media had to watch from a far off hilltop, I'm fairly certain he high-fived with James Harrison, too.

3. Is this heaven? No, it's Latrobe. St. Vincent College is probably the most picturesque setting for an NFL camp. I've talked with several colleagues who've been to all of them, and the majority think, If I was a player, I'd want to camp here. There's a reason the Steelers have made this their preseason home for 46 years, and made no plans to move camp back to their team headquarters (as many have) even in the post-lockout chaos.

4. All quiet on the Jets front ... for now. Quiet here on the football side, with no practice until Monday (the Jets and Texans are the last teams to report since they play the final preseason game of Week 1). But it's certainly not quiet around GM Mike Tannenbaum's office. The Jets made some cuts today, including backup quarterback Mark Brunell, to help with cap room if they land Nnamdi Asomugha. It is possible they bring back Brunell at a lower salary.

5. Remember me? With the late reporting date, the Jets are in no rush with their rookie signings. But a name college football fans know well signed his rookie deal today -- Greg McElroy, the QB who led Alabama to a national title, was a seventh-round pick.
