Niners waive WR Jones after only one season with team

The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday waived injury-prone wide receiver Brandon Jones, one of their big free-agent acquisitions a year ago, according to the team's official Web site.

Jones signed a five-year, $16 million contract, but he had only one reception for 18 yards last season.

The 6-foot-1, 212-pound Jones originally was drafted by the Tennessee Titans, but he ended up on injured reserve in 2005 and 2007. Jones broke his shoulder while diving for a pass during training camp last year and struggled to recover. He was used mostly as a punt returner.

Jones was competing for one of the final wide receiver spots.

The 49ers also waived/injured offensive tackle Chris Patrick, who was signed off the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad last year and appeared in three games for San Francisco.
