Niners' Davis ties league mark for TDs in a season by a tight end

ST. LOUIS -- San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis scored his NFL-record-tying 13th touchdown of the season Sunday on a 73-yard pass from Alex Smith.

Davis, a Pro Bowl pick for the first time in his career, tied Antonio Gates' league mark for touchdown catches by a tight end.

The score gave the 49ers a 14-6 lead over the St. Louis Rams with 7:29 to play.

Davis was known as much for his volatile nature as his lack of production during his first three NFL seasons. He was the 49ers' top draft pick in 2006, sixth overall out of Maryland.
