Tom Brady, QB, Patriots
Brady didn't throw for 517 yards and four touchdowns like he did against the Miami Dolphins in the opener, but he still put up another tremendous stat line for fantasy leaguers. The Michigan product recorded 423 yards and tossed three scores in a 35-21 win over the San Diego Chargers, making him the early candidate to be fantasy football's MVP. Brady's scoring strikes came on a 14-yard connection to Aaron Hernandez, and 10- and 17-yard passes to Rob Gronkowski. This might be a crazy statistical nugget, but Brady is on pace to throw for over 7,500 yards after his first two starts. That's just ridiculous.
Cam Newton, QB, Panthers
So much for Newton coming back down to earth against the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. While he did throw three interceptions, the rookie out of Auburn also threw for 432 yards and scored twice in a 30-23 loss. Newton hit pay dirt on 3-yard pass to Brandon LaFell in the first quarter, and a 4-yard run in the fourth. Before Newton, no quarterback had thrown for 400-plus yards in each of his team's first two games of the season -- not even Dan Marino or Peyton Manning. He was active in a mere 14.9 percent of NFL.com leagues, but that number will increase in Week 3 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Adrian Peterson, RB, Vikings
Peterson more than made up for his slow start in Week 1, shredding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for 120 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns in 24-20 loss. A.D. found the end zone on a 1-yard run in the first quarter, and also took it to the house on a 9-yard run in the second. The fact that the Vikings offense has become one dimensional with the struggling Donovan McNabb under center is cause for concern in the long run, but Peterson is still an absolute beast in fantasy land. He's set to face the upstart Detroit Lions next on the schedule. He rushed for 191 yards and two scores against them in 2010.
Miles Austin, WR, Cowboys
Austin went off against the San Francisco 49ers, posting nine catches for 143 and a trio of touchdown catches in a 27-24 win. Targeted often with Dez Bryant (quadriceps) out of action, the veteran out of Monmouth found the end zone on 53- and 25-yard strikes from Tony Romo and a 5-yard pass from backup Jon Kitna. Austin has now found the end zone four times on the season and looks to be primed to record some of the best totals of his entire career. Even if Bryant is back in action for Week 3's Monday night tilt against the Washington Redskins, Austin is a must-start wideout in all formats.
Vincent Jackson, WR, Chargers
After all the yards and fantasy points the Patriots allowed to Miami Dolphins wide receivers in Week 1, it wasn't much of a prognostication to suggest Jackson would put up big numbers this weekend. He clearly obliged with 10 catches, 172 yards and two touchdowns in what was a tough loss at Gillette Stadium. His scores came on passes of 3 and 26 yards from Philip Rivers, who finished with 378 yards in the contest. Next on the schedule is a home game against the Kansas City Chiefs, who have been ripped to shreds in their first two games of the season. Look for Jackson to put up another great stat line.
