New York Giants' Mark Herzlich takes aim at starting spot

New York Giants' linebacker Mark Herzlich is confident he'll be the G-men's starting middle linebacker come Week 1, the Star-Ledger reported.

Jones: The underdog champions

After winning their second Super Bowl in five years, the Giants feel like ... underdogs? Kimberly Jones reports. **More ...**

"It's mine for the taking," the second-year player said Wednesday. "I wish the best for everybody else, but it's still a competition.

"I want the team to do well, and if it's not the spot that the coaches want me in, then that's one thing. But the way I look at it is, there is a place that I can play and I don't want anyone to take that away from me."

Herzlich has been battling a broken right ankle that knocked him out for the season after 11 games. He told the newspaper that it's fully healed and the full range of motion has returned.

Herzlich has been an inspiration to many, overcoming cancer while an All-American at Boston College. He went undrafted last year, but made the Giants' roster out of training camp, starting two games before his injury cut his season short.

He had 12 tackles last year for the Super Bowl champions.
