Michael Sam to participate in 'Dancing with the Stars'

2014 seventh-round draft pick Michael Sam is taking his talents to the stage as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars.

Cast members, including the 25-year-old defensive end, were announced Tuesday on Good Morning America.

Sam, who last year became the first openly gay NFL player to be drafted, said, via his Twitter account, that he's still preparing for a career in the NFL.

"Football remains my unquestioned number one priority, however, while I continue to train and stay ready, I am ecstatic to participate in a fun, athletic competition like so many players before me have done," he wrote.

Sam dismissed speculation that joining the television competition would preclude him from participating in the first ever Veterans Combine this offseason or hurt his ability to try out for NFL teams.

"Filming this offseason is very flexible and allows me to be part of the veterans combine 3/22 if accepted or any other workouts," he wrote.

The St. Louis Rams drafted Sam in the final round of the NFL draft before being eventually cutting the undersized end prior to the 2014 season. He then spent part of the season on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad before being waived.

Sam is currently a free agent.
