Former Washington quarterback and current NFL analyst Mark Brunell has been largely supportive of Robert Griffin III.
But that all changed this week.
In an ESPN appearance, the long-time starter ripped the former No. 2 overall pick and sounded less enthusiastic about Griffin's chances of turning his career around than ever.
When asked if Griffin was good enough to succeed in the NFL, Brunell dropped this:
"I do not," Brunell said, via The Washington Post. "From what I've seen the last couple of years -- listen, he burst onto the scene and that was impressive -- but like I said, he has gone backwards. It's not just his decision-making, it's his fundamentals. He's taking too many hits, he's quick to get out of the pocket. Last year was difficult to watch. Does he have the skill set? Yes, but we haven't seen it in some time."
Brunell has joined a growing list of analysts who seem to think that Griffin is a hopeless cause. Since a ground-breaking rookie season, Griffin has struggled with injury and learning a new system. Off the field, his public perception has taken some pretty serious hits as well.
At this point, though, what Brunell is saying feels like a bit of a pile-on. Haven't we all recognized some of Griffin's systematic failures from a year ago by now?
There were plenty of people who tuned in just to see Griffin during his rookie season who can't wait for that version of the quarterback to return.
Here's hoping it happens soon so we can stop hearing about his decline.
