Mangini to assess Delhomme on Saturday before picking QB

Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini told reporters Friday that he needs one more day to examine quarterback Jake Delhomme's ankle and mobility before selecting a starter for this weekend's home game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Delhomme is listed as questionable on the Browns' official injury report.

"(Jake) had a little bit more work yesterday and little more work today," Mangini said. "It's better than last week, but we've got to go through the whole set of days before we make a decision."

Mangini also suggested that Browns running back Peyton Hillis, who's also listed as questionable, would be ready to play Sunday despite injuring his thigh.

"We're probably going to rest Peyton today," Mangini said. "He had a little tightness yesterday. It shouldn't be an issue for the game ... He just got tight, and I decided to pull him and rest him."

Delhomme said Thursday that his right ankle has steadily improved after he missed three games with the injury.

Delhomme sustained a high ankle sprain during the Sept. 12 season opener at Tampa Bay. He has been inactive the past three games, but he said he was able to move better during practice Wednesday, and as long as he doesn't have any setbacks, he hopes to face the Falcons.

Seneca Wallace has filled in for Delhomme the past three weeks, throwing for 554 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions.

Delhomme said it will be up to Cleveland's coaches if he plays, but the 35-year-old took snaps with the starting offense during the portion of practice open to reporters Thursday.

Defensive ends Kenyon Coleman (knee) and Robaire Smith (back) and center Alex Mack (shoulder) are questionable for the Browns. Offensive tackle John St. Clair (ankle) is out.

For the Falcons, linebackers Curtis Lofton (knee) and Sean Weatherspoon (ankle) and wide receiver Michael Jenkins (shoulder) are questionable.
