Loggains might pinch-hit for Heimerdinger as Titans' play-caller

With Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, the team could turn to 30-year-old quarterback/passing game coach Dowell Loggains to call plays in Sunday's critical AFC South matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to *The Tennessean*.

"I am the next guy in line and, like we tell our players, 'If someone goes down, we expect the next guy to step up and do the job,'" said Loggains, who spent the past two years as a Titans quality control assistant. "You prepare and work as hard as you can."

Loggains was asked by reporters about the last time he called plays in a game.

"That," he said, "would be never."

Heimerdinger, who began treatment Wednesday and returned to practice Friday, helped assemble the Titans' game plan earlier in the week. Loggains said Heimerdinger's resolve has inspired the Titans: "What he's been doing is a sign of his character and strength for him to be able to do what he is doing."

Titans coach Jeff Fisher told the newspaper that Heimerdinger might serve as a consultant Sunday, operating from the press box, normally Loggains' game-time location.

"(Loggains) has done a great job with this offense, and he has been a terrific asset," Fisher said. "He has a lot of new ideas."

Titans veteran quarterback Kerry Collins, who is expected to start against the Jaguars, called Loggains a "sharp guy."
