Lions WR Johnson questionable; QB Stafford practices

The Detroit Lions don't know if they will have their leading receiver on the field when they meet the New York Giants at New Meadowlands Stadium on Sunday.

Calvin Johnson was limited in practice for the third consecutive day Friday and is listed as questionable on the Lions' official injury report.

Johnson sat out the final few minutes of his team's 44-6 victory over the St. Louis Rams last Sunday after hurting his shoulder while making a diving catch near the sideline. He also is nursing a knee injury.

"We will see when we get to Sunday," Lions coach Jim Schwartztold *The Detroit News* on Thursday. "Anything that goes on during the week you have to temper, both optimistically and pessimistically. We are just trying to get (Johnson) to Sunday and see where he is."

In other Lions injury news, quarterback Matthew Stafford practiced again in a limited role.

Stafford, who hasn't played since injuring his throwing shoulder during the season opener against the Chicago Bears, was upgraded on the team's injury report Friday after being out of practice before that.

"Each day he's doing a little bit more -- doing something a little bit different each day," Schwartz said. "We'll try to keep him on that track."

Schwartz hasn't named a starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Giants, but the coach said he'd be getting ahead of himself if he already started talking about activating Stafford this weekend.

"We'll see Sunday," Schwartz said. "If he is able to get back, it has shown that he's right on track and he's healthy enough to be able to be in a game, but let's wait until Sunday before we start ... let's not get ahead of ourselves."

Shaun Hill has started all four games at quarterback since Stafford's injury.
