The Eagles shocked the NFL when they traded running back LeSean McCoy to the Bills on the eve of free agency. Philadelphia's subsequent decision to sign both DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews in free agency has left McCoy scratching his head.
"I saw that they originally were trying to get Frank Gore, and he backed out," McCoy said on *The Rich Eisen Show*. "So then when they got DeMarco and they got Ryan Mathews, I thought it was like a panic move."
The Eagles will pay $12.6 million to their running backs group in 2014, according to NJ.com. That's the second-highest allocation of funds to that position in the league. McCoy seemed to intimate that Chip Kelly -- who took over full control of Eagles personnel this offseason -- might be learning on the job.
"I didn't understand it. I should say that," McCoy said. "And Chip I think is a really good coach. I think this is something different for him kind of managing both, from being a coach to now kind of managing the team as far as the players that they get and they pay."
McCoy also suggested that the signings of Murray and Mathews were moves motivated in part by the desire to sooth a fanbase upset about his sudden departure.
"With that media in Philadelphia, they can get tough on you. So I guess that was just the way to make it right. I don't know," he said. "I can't really answer it. They took two backs to replace one. I think DeMarco's a hell of a back. I think he'll do a good job there. I'm not sure how that went."
