Khalil Mack: Re-signing with Chargers 'about winning ball games,' not money

Los Angeles Chargers pass rusher Khalil Mack contemplated retirement before ultimately re-signing with the club this offseason.

The 34-year-old could have gone elsewhere to pursue a ring but called returning to L.A. a "no-brainer."

"Why not here, man?" Mack said on Wednesday, via ESPN's Kris Rhim.

Mack inked a one-year, $18 million deal to remain a Charger this offseason as one of the top free-agent edge rushers on the market. He said the decision wasn't about money but rather that he wanted to be part of what Jim Harbaugh's club has started to build.

"I had to be fair in the approach to things and not making it about just finances and all the different things," Mack said. "I tried to make it more so just about winning ball games."

Mack earned a third consecutive Pro Bowl nod last season for the Chargers despite generating six sacks, tied for his fewest since the four he notched in his 2014 rookie campaign.

In 11 years with the Raiders, Bears and Chargers, Mack has played in five postseason games without a single victory. He believes L.A. is the best spot to end that ignominious record.

"Just not wanting to give up on that goal and that ambition that I have ever since I stepped into the league," Mack said. "I knew I wanted to play in important games and win a Super Bowl."
