Jim Tomsula: Colin Kaepernick is not on an 'island'

The San Francisco 49ers are 2-5 and have the worst offense in football. On Tuesday, coach Jim Tomsula disputed a report that his quarterback had alienated himself from the team.

FOX's Jay Glazer reported Sunday that Colin Kaepernick's confidence was "completely shot" and that Kaepernick is "on an island" in the 49ers' locker room.

"First of all, with 'Kaepernick on an island,' I don't know where that's coming from," Tomsula told KNBR-AM, via the San Jose Mercury News. "That's definitely not reality."

Tomsula also addressed a Monday CSN Bay Area report about a tension-filled meeting following the team's loss to the Packers last month. According to the report, the meeting turned "animated" when the coaches left the room and one player singled out Kaepernick, which led another player to jump to the struggling QB's defense.

"The biggest thing I said to them was, 'Guys, it's like an Italian dining room table.'" he said. "Everyone is sitting around the table, and sometimes it gets heated, dishes get broken and people leave. But everybody's got to come back to the table to eat. When it's all said and done, there's hugging and kissing, and we're eating good food again."

As many predicted before the season, Tomsula has inherited a deeply flawed operation in San Francisco. A less kind observation: Tomsula has been asked to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic.
