Jets WR Holmes reportedly owed $7.5 million of 2013 salary

After their season ended with three consecutive losses and wideout Santonio Holmes planted on the bench during the season finale, the Jets promised that their disgruntled captain wasn't going anywhere.

The Jets made good on that promise Wednesday morning, and their wallet is a lot lighter because of it.

The New York Post reported that Holmes was due $7.5 million of his $11 million 2013 salary if he remained on the Jets' roster Wednesday morning. The newspaper also reported the Jets now owe Holmes $15.25 million guaranteed overall. Holmes finished the 2011 season with 51 receptions for 654 yards with eight touchdowns.

Despite the Jets' assertion that Holmes' future was safe with the team, it still seemed like the wideout could have been on his way out the door after his acrimonious end to the regular season. Holmes was pulled during the fourth quarter of the Jets' final loss of the season, and a number of teammates called his attitude into question after the game.

The Jets also reportedly locked up another wide receiver Tuesday. A person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press that the team has re-signed Patrick Turner to a one-year contract.
