In reality, Smith has been one of football's worst quarterbacks during that time. It was an assessment that showed a troubling lack of self-awareness and surely led to eye rolls in Florham Park.
Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who's had a front-row seat on the GenoCoaster, was asked about Smith's comments on Thursday.
"We've all got to do better," Mornhinweg said, according to ESPN. "We all have to play better and we have to coach better. We'll leave it at that."
Mornhinweg elaborated when pressed on the issue.
"He certainly has shown flashes of playing well," he said. "Like I said, we all have to play better. This isn't about flashing or anything. We've got to play better. Everything we do has to be better. That takes hard work, it takes preparation, it takes a certain mentality."
It doesn't sound like Mornhinweg was thrilled with Smith's choice of words. This is understandable, considering Smith's nose dive will play a major factor in Mornhinweg likely losing his job.
