Jets' new GM promises to be active in free agency

Mike Maccagnan is a new general manager in New York, and when you're a new general manager in New York, you promise to be different than the last one.

That's why Maccagnan had this quote on the team's web site Tuesday: "Building through the draft is ideally what I'd like to do, but we'll be very active in free agency."

Maccagnan's predecessor, John Idzik, ignored a wealth of salary-cap space heading into this season, which ultimately cost him his job after just two years.

Now, consider the Jets have an alarmingly low tolerance displayed for general managers, Maccagnan must find a way to make a splash on the open market just to appease his owner and fan base early in the process, even if it might not be the best move.

Because right now, there's nothing more important for a new Jets general manager than convincing people you're not John Idzik.
