Jerry has recovered well enough to participate in Falcons camp

Defensive tackle Peria Jerry, the Atlanta Falcons' top draft pick in 2009, has recovered from a major knee injury and will begin workouts with the rest of the team when training camp opens Thursday.

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said that Jerry, who played in just two games last season before being hurt, has made enough progress to the point there are no major medical concerns.

Dimitroff didn't say if Jerry would participate in all drills, adding that the Falcons must be careful on how they proceed with their projected starting nose tackle.

Jerry immediately established himself as an anchor along the defensive line at a position the Falcons have been trying to upgrade for years. However, during a Week 2 game against the Carolina Panthers, he suffered a serious injury that involved tears -- the Falcons won't disclose the nature of the injury except to say anterior cruciate ligaments weren't torn.

The Falcons hope to use Jerry and Corey Peters, their 2010 third-round selection, in a rotation at nose tackle.
