Jarryd Hayne fumbles away NFL debut with 49ers

If Jarryd Hayne gets his own Disney movie one day, Monday night's NFL debut will serve as the narrative setback the Australian rugby league star must overcome to beat the odds.

Hayne, a surprise inclusion on the Niners' game day roster, started his NFL career with an ugly turnover. He misjudged his first punt return, then failed to make a diving catch, the ball squirting through his arms. The Vikings recovered at their own 43-yard line, robbing the Niners of excellent field position.

Here's how the play was explained in a saucy live blog by the Guardian in Australia.

Here's the Hayne Plane! His first touch in the NFL. And ... he drops it? Oh my goodness me, he drops it! His first touch is a fumble! He's grassed it. Oh my.

He freaking grassed it.

49ers coach Jim Tomsula proceeded to replace Hayne with Bruce Ellington on punt returns. Hayne had a minor role on offense, finishing with four carries for 13 yards.

"It was obviously disappointing," Hayne said of being replaced by Ellington, according to FoxSports.com. "I had to focus on the next job, and that was it."

Carlos Hyde's monster night leaves no doubt of the pecking order in the Niners' backfield, though the calf injury suffered by Reggie Bush could help keep his friend Hayne in the mix for the time being.

The Hayne Plane will rise again. Maybe.
