Hakeem Nicks says he's visiting San Francisco 49ers

Hakeem Nicks is finally getting a look-see on the open market.

Nicks, who checked in at No. 76 on our Top 101 free agents list when the month started, hasn't seen a sniff of interest in free agency to date.

The 27-year-old pass-catcher started six games for the Indianapolis Colts in 2014 and caught 38 passes for 405 yards and one touchdown. Nicks' play picked up down the stretch of the season, but the Indy coaching staff didn't think enough of the wideout to give him the snaps of an injured and ineffective Reggie Wayne.

Nicks' career trajectory nosedived after his stud 2011 season. Injuries helped dissipate his explosiveness and left him as a JAG (just another guy) on the outside -- a JAG with a proclivity to suffer from frustrating bouts of the dropsies.

If he latches onto Jim Tomsula's team, it would be to add veteran depth behind Anquan Boldin and newly signed Torrey Smith. With young and heretofore unproven pass-snaggers Bruce Ellington and Quinton Patton (12 combined career catches) next on the depth chart, the Niners might desire veteran insurance -- other than recent free-agent signee Jerome Simpson. At this stage, however, it isn't unlikely Nicks will be guaranteed any roster spot entering offseason work.
