Gonzalez breaks all-time tight ends record with 816th catch

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Kansas City's Tony Gonzalez broke the NFL record for receptions by a tight end, catching his 816th career pass early in the third quarter against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Gonzalez, who entered the game needing three catches to break Shannon Sharpe's mark, tied it with a 7-yard reception on the Chiefs' first play of the second half. Two plays later, Gonzalez broke the record by taking a short pass from Brodie Croyle and gaining for 17 yards.

Gonzalez, selected to his ninth straight Pro Bowl earlier this month, also holds the all-time record for tight ends with 66 touchdown catches. He entered the game with 92 catches for 1,108 yards -- his third 1,000-yard season -- and five touchdowns.
