Godfrey has surgery for broken hand; Beason sits out practice

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina starting free safety Charles Godfrey has undergone surgery for a broken right hand, further depleting the defense.

Godfrey was injured in Saturday's preseason loss at Miami. Coach John Fox wouldn't say how long Godfrey will be out, but the team did make a roster move to add depth on Monday.

Veteran safety Kevin Kaesviharn was signed and the Panthers waived receiver Jason Carter. Kaesviharn turns 33 this week and is entering his ninth NFL season. He played for New Orleans in 2008.

The Panthers were also without linebacker Jon Beason on Monday. He's expected to miss at least a couple weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu tore his Achilles' tendon earlier in training camp.
