Giants spend night in K.C.; kickoff time vs. Vikes might change

The nasty weather that descended upon Minnesota wreaked havoc on the New York Giants' travel plans -- and could alter the kickoff time of Sunday's game against the Vikings.

The team decided to spend the night in Kansas City, Mo., where its flight from New Jersey had been diverted because of a blizzard that shut down Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Pat Hanlon, the Giants' vice president of communications, revealed the team's plans via Twitter.

The Giants are scheduled to play the Vikings on Sunday at noon CT, and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello initially indicated that the league still planned to honor that time. Now it appears a wait-and-see approach is in effect.

On Saturday night, Aiello provided an update via Twitter, stating that the league is in regular contact with both teams as well as the local public safety authorities in Minnesota about when the game should be played.

"We will continue to do so and are prepared to make adjustments in the schedule as necessary," Aiello's statement read. "The Giants are spending the night in Kansas City and plan to fly to Minneapolis tomorrow morning at 8 am.

"Because the flight is less than one hour, the game could begin as scheduled at noon CT. If conditions in Minneapolis dictate otherwise, we will move the kickoff to later in the day and announce it soon as we have the information. ... We will pay close attention to local conditions and be mindful of issues of fan safety and convenience in making the final scheduling decision."

Hanlon later tweeted the Giants' busy Sunday morning schedule: "#NYG plans for tomorrow: wake up at 6 am, depart hotel by 715, back on that Continental charter we've come to love, depart at 8, arrive at 9."

The Giants had hoped to reach Minneapolis on Saturday night, and they even planned to hold their Saturday walkthrough in the Kansas City airport.

Weather forecasts called for steady snow in Minneapolis until the evening, then clearing skies. Sunday's forecast: Sunny but extremely cold, with wind chill approaching negative-25 degrees.

The Vikings play indoors at the Metrodome.

The Giants already had changed their travel plans in anticipation of the storm, according to the *New York Daily News*. The team left New Jersey around 9:30 a.m. ET -- three hours earlier than normal -- hoping to reach Minnesota without any problems.
