Former Chargers CB Asante Samuel Jr. signs with Steelers practice squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers are adding a potential piece to their secondary as their season hits its stretch run.

Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., who recently was medically cleared after undergoing a spinal fusion procedure this offseason, is signing with the Steelers' practice squad, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday. Pittsburgh announced the addition on Wednesday.

Samuel took a number of visits to interested teams after he received medical clearance and is set to join a Pittsburgh defense that has rounded into form after a dismal start to the season.

Samuel, 25, was NFL.com's No. 21-ranked free agent this offseason, after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The son of longtime defensive back Asante Samuel, Samuel Jr. made a name for himself with six interceptions over his first three seasons in the NFL before his 2024 campaign was cut short due to injury after just four games.

The Steelers (5-4) host the Cincinnati Bengals (3-6) this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
