Fantasy mailbag: Tough Week 16 matchups for stars

Who will be the No. 1 overall pick in next year's fantasy football drafts? - A. Krogsbell (via Facebook)

Michael Fabiano: It's hard to argue against Jamaal Charles being the top dog in fantasy drafts next season. He's in the midst of the best statistical campaign of his career and, at 27, he'll still be in the prime of his career. Remember, Charles had just 499 combined carries in his first four NFL seasons (he missed most of 2011 with a torn ACL). He's also in an offense that utilizes him as a true featured back, and no one is stealing goal line carries from this dynamic runner. Sure, he might be hard pressed to duplicate this season's immense success again, but Charles is a good bet to remain a fantasy star.

Targets/Touches: Wright. Now.

Which quarterback should I start in Week 16: Peyton Manning or Nick Foles? - @GueroSepulveda (via Twitter)

M.F.: This is a legitimate question, as Foles has evolved into one of the best quarterbacks in fantasy football over the last several weeks. Still, I couldn't recommend benching the highest-scoring player based on fantasy points. While Manning is coming off one of his worst stat lines of the season, he's also in line to rebound against a Houston Texans team that will head into Week 16 with two wins. So as much as I like Foles regardless of the matchup, sitting Manning isn't a move I would make in championship week.

Would you take a chance on a lesser-known player like Ryan Fitzpatrick, Kirk Cousins or Jordan Todman in fantasy championship week, or should you just "dance with who brought you?" - S. Proper (via Facebook)

M.F.: If I needed help at the position, absolutely. Look at some of the top scorers from a week ago and you'll see names like Fitzpatrick, Ryan Tannehill, Matt Cassel, Matt Flynn and Matt Asiata. Those players aren't exactly the who's who of fantasy football. Fitzpatrick and Cousins both have nice matchups this week and are viable options if you're lacking at the quarterback spot. In the event that Maurice Jones-Drew (hamstring) is out for the Jacksonville Jaguars once again, I would also start Todman in what is a plus matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

Who do I start this week: Jay Cutler or Tannehill? - @ToeMcD (via Twitter)

M.F.: I'm going with Cutler, who faces a Philadelphia Eagles defense that allowed close to 30 fantasy points to Cassel just one week ago. The veteran quarterback has been a star in the offense of coach Marc Trestman, scoring 17-plus fantasy points in four of his last five full starts. Surprisingly, Cutler is still a free agent in a ton of leagues for those owners in need of a signal-caller.

Marshawn Lynch has a tough matchup in Week 16. Should I bench him in favor of Le'Veon Bell? - @rc_2222 (via Twitter)

M.F.: As much as I like Bell, there's no way I'm benching Lynch in fantasy championship week. It's not like this week's opponent, the Arizona Cardinals, have an impenetrable defense either. In fact, Chris Johnson went for 91 scrimmage yards, one touchdown and 15.1 fantasy points against them last week. Furthermore, two of the last three featured runners to face the Cardinals have scored in double digits.

What do you think of starting Steven Jackson and Michael Crabtree in Week 16? - @SkylorSwope (via Twitter)

M.F.: Jackson is a borderline No. 2 or 3 fantasy runner based on what is an unfavorable matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. On a positive note, he has scored 13-plus fantasy points in three of his last four games. Crabtree is a No. 3 wide receiver or flex starter against the Atlanta Falcons, who surrendered 129 yards, one touchdown and 18.9 fantasy points to Pierre Garcon one week ago.

Who is the better dynasty-league hold: Rueben Randle or Terrance Williams? - @MaxHodg92 (via Twitter)

M.F.: I'm going with Randle, who looks likely to have a starting role for the New York Giants next season. Hakeem Nicks is in a contract year and no lock to return to the Big Apple, especially when you consider his lack of statistical success in 2013. Randle has been quiet as a church mouse in recent weeks, but he's also shown flashes of brilliance at times this season and will be a popular sleeper in fantasy drafts. Williams has some definite upside as well, but Randle is a more attractive candidate assuming the G-Men part ways with Nicks in the offseason.

Who do you think wins Rookie of the Year in fantasy football? - @chi_it (via Twitter)

M.F.: This one is simple for me -- Eddie Lacy. Not only has he been the most productive rookie in fantasy football, but he's also been one of the most reliable. In fact, he's scored in double digits eight times in his last 10 games and ranks among the 10-best players at his position based on fantasy points. Lacy was also an absolute steal with an average draft position (ADP) of Round 7 (60.99).

Should I be worried about DeMarco Murray? The Cowboys don't seem to use him much in the second half! - @GTheodossis (via Twitter)

M.F.: I have no idea what the Cowboys were thinking in short-changing Murray's carries in the second half of last week's loss to the Green Bay Packers. Still, he's become a tough runner to bench in recent weeks. Despite some questionable play-calling when it comes to the ground attack, Murray has still scored double-digit fantasy points in each of his last five games including two with 20-plus points. He also has a terrific matchup against the Washington Redskins up next on the schedule, so I don't see how benching Murray is much of an option.

Should I look to start a different quarterback than Russell Wilson in Week 16? - @koolaid6one9 (via Twitter)

M.F.: Wilson is a much better quarterback at home than he is on the road, so I'd have confidence in him despite a tough matchup against the Cardinals. Remember, the Red Birds just allowed 30-plus fantasy points to Ryan Fitzpatrick just one week ago. If you still prefer to bench Wilson, then consider Cutler or Cousins off the waiver wire.
