Dolphins' trade of Smiley to Jags is official after he passes physical

Guard Justin Smiley passed his physical Tuesday, making his trade from the Miami Dolphins to the Jacksonville Jaguars official.

Smiley, a six-year NFL veteran, also agreed to restructure the five-year, $25 million contract that he signed with the Dolphins in 2008. The Jaguars gave up a conditional seventh-round pick in the hopes that Smiley can upgrade their offensive line, which struggled on runs up the middle and in protecting quarterback David Garrard.

Smiley likely will compete with Vince Manuwai and Uche Nwaneri for playing time in Jacksonville. The Jaguars waived first-year running back Allen Patrick to make roster room for Smiley.

Smiley started his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers and played in all 16 games during his first three seasons (2004-2006). However, he has struggled to repeat that feat since then, appearing in eight, 12 and 15 games, respectively, in the last three years.

Miami had tried to trade Smiley all offseason, reportedly because of concerns about his left shoulder, which has been surgically repaired twice.

The Dolphins filled Smiley's roster spot Monday by signing former Dallas Cowboys lineman Cory Procter, a five-year NFL veteran who can play guard or center.

Procter was released by the Cowboys earlier this month after he spent five seasons with the team. Current Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano was the Cowboys' offensive line coach from 2003 to 2007 and worked with Procter, who could compete with veterans Richie Incognito and Donald Thomas and rookie John Jerry for a starting job in Miami.
