Dolphins sign T.J. Yates following Ryan Tannehill injury

The Dolphins have added veteran quarterback insurance in the wake of Ryan Tannehill's knee sprain.

Former Texans signal-caller T.J. Yates signed with Miami on Tuesday.

Yates announced the transaction on Twitter earlier in the day:

Yates had been out of the league all season after tearing his ACL in the second of two emergency starts with Houston late last year. He has appeared in 18 games over five NFL seasons, completing 58.1 percent of his passes at 6.8 yards per attempt for a 6-to-8 TD-to-INT ratio and 72.8 passer rating.

The 29-year-old will back up Matt Moore until Tannehill recovers from his ACL and MCL sprain.

At the very least, the Dolphins now have a quarterback with playoff experience. Yates was at the helm for the Texans' 31-10 win over the Bengals back in January of 2012.
