The Miami Dolphins released quarterback John Beck, the team announced Monday.

Beck, a second-round draft pick by the Dolphins in 2007, appeared in five games in his rookie season, starting four. He passed for 559 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.

"We want to thank John for his work ethic and his professionalism," Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said in a statement. "We wish him well in the future."

Beck was likely deemed expendable after the Dolphins drafted West Virginia quarterback Pat White in the 2009 NFL Draft. In addition to White, the Dolphins have two other quarterbacks on their roster: starter Chad Pennington, and second-year backup Chad Henne.
