Detroit Lions to play in 2026 NFL Munich game

The National Football League has announced that the Detroit Lions will be one of the participating teams for the upcoming 2026 NFL Munich game, presented by DKB.

The game in Munich will be one of a record nine international games in 2026 across four continents, seven countries and eight stadiums -- and will be played at the FC Bayern Munich Stadium as part of a multiyear commitment to playing games in the city in 2026 and 2028.

"Germany continues to be a key market in the NFL's international growth ambitions, with Europe's largest fanbase," said NFL Germany General Manager Alexander Steinforth. "We are excited to welcome the Detroit Lions to play in the 2026 NFL Munich game -- and in partnership with the Lions, FC Bayern Munich and the City of Munich, we look forward to bringing an incredible NFL experience to fans across the region in the NFL 2026 season."

"We are thrilled to be playing internationally and specifically in Munich for the 2026 season," said Detroit Lions president & CEO Rod Wood. "As an organization, we have invested greatly in the German market and are excited to play in front of our passionate German fans."

"It has been a dream of mine to play a game in my mother's home country of Germany since coming to the league," said Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. "I cannot wait to play in front of the incredible fans that I've gotten to know through my visits and football camps in the country. Their support for me and the country's instant connection to the Lions brand is inspiring, and I'm looking forward to our team getting to showcase Detroit football on an international scale."

The Lions' opponent, along with the game date and kickoff time, will be announced when the full 2026 NFL schedule is revealed this spring.

The Lions have marketing rights in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as part of the league's Global Markets Program -- an initiative that awards NFL clubs marketing rights in markets outside of the U.S. to build brand awareness and fandom, through fan engagement, events and commercial opportunities. The NFL's Global Market Program sees 11 teams hold marketing rights in Germany, with six of those teams also active in Austria and Switzerland.

As part of the wider commitment to the regions, regular season games are also confirmed to be played in Munich in 2028 and Berlin in 2027 and 2029.

Beyond the NFL international games, the league is committed to growing the game at every level in Germany, engaging with fans year-round through partners, programs and initiatives.

NFL Flag -- the NFL's official youth flag football program -- launched in Germany four years ago, with over 110,000 young girls and boys now participating nationwide, showcasing the league's efforts to increase participation and inspire the next generation as flag football heads toward its debut as an Olympic sport at LA28.
