Derek Anderson to start Sunday for Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers will be without Cam Newton in Week 15.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera announced Wednesday that Derek Anderson will start at quarterback on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The announcement comes one day after Newton suffered two fractures in his lower back as a result of a two-car accident near the Panthers' team facility. Newton was discharged from a local hospital Wednesday morning.

This will be just the second missed game of Newton's career, both coming this season. A rib injury kept the franchise star out of action in Week 1. Anderson made the spot start in that game and played well in a win over the Bucs.

Now Anderson will see the Bucs a second time in a game that counts as a virtual must-win for the 4-8-1 Panthers.
