Columnist: Fathers of NFL stars had right idea with flag football

The Washington Post's Sally Jenkins asked readers to look at a different type of youth football -- flag football.

With so many flag football leagues popping up around the country -- including one run by former Chicago Bears linebacker Jim Schwantz -- proponents offer it as an alternative for parents leery about allowing their kids to play tackle football before high school.

Jenkins noted that the sons of Archie Manning and Tom Brady Sr. played flag football.

Jenkins said both fathers could be a good example for parents who still want their kids to play football. She cited Dr. Robert Cantu's recommendation to ban tackle football for kids who are younger than 14 and Sports Legacy Institute's Chris Nowinski, who has called for more caution towards kids' tackle football.
