Colts to place Art Jones on season-ending IR

Colts defensive lineman Art Jones seemed like the ideal candidate for short-term injured reserve. Indianapolis, already starving for help on defense, will take help wherever it can get it.

But Jones' ankle injury is too severe. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday the Colts will place him on season-ending IR following Friday's surgery, per two informed of Jones' fate.

The 29-year-old is one of the better players at his position when healthy, but health is a fickle concept. Jones hasn't played in 16 games since 2012.

After signing a five-year, $33 million contract, the hope was that Jones would solidify a unit that has given the Colts trouble over the years. In a heavy push for the Super Bowl in 2015, it remains one of their biggest weaknesses.

The former Raven will now have to wait another year to make his way back on the field. Expect the Colts to be active over the next few days as rosters downsize.
